Protecting Your Voip System

It isn't difficult for businesses to transition from a traditional phone system to a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phone system. A local cabling service can run all the wires you need to upgrade your network and install the system. However, once the system is installed, you need to do your part to make sure it stays secure. After all, VoIP systems are run over the Internet, so it's important to secure your system to keep hackers at bay. Fortunately, keeping your VoIP system secure isn't difficult.

Have a Strong Password

In order for a hacker to gain access to your VoIP system, they'll need to be able to crack your password. A strong password is your first line of defense. You shouldn't choose a password that is overly simple or a word/number sequence that is meaningful to your personally. Instead, choose your password at random. Also, your password should consist of upper and lowercase letters, symbols, and numbers, so that it's harder to crack. Consider choosing a quote or song lyric that you can easily remember, and using the first letter of each word as your password. To include numbers and symbols, simply substitute them for letters. For example, use an "at" sign for the letter "A" and a "5" for the letter "S." This way, your password is complicated enough to protect your company's network, but easy enough for you to remember without writing it down.

Controlling Remote Access

Once your network cables are in place and your system is running properly, you can allow your employees to access your system remotely. However, it's important to control access to your company's network by whitelisting each IP address individually. By entering specific IP addresses to grant remote access to your system, your employees can only access your system from that specific location. People trying to access your system from other locations are automatically blocked.

System Maintenance

The cabling service that you hire to install your VoIP system can also come out to your office and test your system for potential security threats. It's a good idea to have your system tested professionally on occasion so that you are aware of any weak points. Additionally, you should always update your system software to the current version for added protection.
